Twilight Negroni

Embrace the evening with the Twilight Negroni, a sophisticated and moody twist on the classic cocktail. Replacing Campari with the rich, bittersweet complexity of Amaro Averna, this variation offers deeper herbal and caramel notes alongside the traditional gin botanicals and sweet vermouth undertones. Perfect for sipping as dusk settles, the Twilight Negroni is both familiar and intriguingly different, garnished with a vibrant orange peel.

Ingredients

  • 3 cl gin
  • 3 cl Amaro Averna
  • 3 cl Martini Rosso
  • 1 piece orange peel
  • ice cubes

Accessories

  • 1 lowball glass
  • 1 strainer

Instructions

  1. Fill a mixing glass (or the base of a shaker) with ice cubes.

  2. Add the Gin, Amaro Averna, and Martini Rosso to the glass.

  3. Stir the mixture well for about 20-30 seconds until thoroughly chilled.

  4. Fill a lowball glass with fresh ice cubes.

  5. Strain the mixture from the mixing glass into the prepared lowball glass.

  6. Express the oils from the orange peel over the drink by twisting it, then drop it into the glass or rest it on the rim as garnish.

Trivia

  • What makes the Twilight Negroni different from a classic Negroni?

The main difference lies in the bitter component. A Twilight Negroni uses Amaro Averna instead of Campari. This substitution gives the drink a darker hue and a richer, slightly sweeter, and more complex flavour profile with notes of caramel, citrus, and herbs, compared to Campari's vibrant bitterness.

  • What does a Twilight Negroni taste like?

A Twilight Negroni offers a balanced blend of bitter, sweet, and herbal notes. You'll taste the botanicals from the gin, the rich, bittersweet complexity of Amaro Averna with its hints of licorice and caramel, and the sweet, spiced notes of the red vermouth. It's smoother and darker tasting than a traditional Negroni.

  • Can I use a different Amaro instead of Averna?

Yes, you can experiment with other dark, complex amaros like Cynar, Ramazzotti, or Meletti. Each will bring a slightly different character to the drink, altering the 'Twilight' experience, but maintaining the Negroni structure.

  • What's the best gin for a Twilight Negroni?

A classic London Dry gin works excellently, providing a solid botanical backbone. However, you could also experiment with a more contemporary gin with pronounced citrus or floral notes to complement the Amaro Averna. Choose a gin you enjoy drinking.

  • When is the best occasion to serve a Twilight Negroni?

Its richer, complex profile makes the Twilight Negroni perfect for cooler evenings, fitting well into Winter & Autumn settings. The 'Twilight' name also makes it a fun, thematic choice for Halloween gatherings or any sophisticated evening party or aperitif moment.

  • What is the best way to garnish a Twilight Negroni?

A classic orange peel garnish is traditional and highly recommended. Expressing the orange oils over the drink adds a bright aromatic lift that contrasts beautifully with the darker notes of the Averna. A blackberry could also be used for a thematic visual twist.
