Trivia

  • What is a Bahia cocktail?

The Bahia cocktail is a tropical mixed drink originating from or inspired by the Bahia region of Brazil. It typically features Cachaça, pineapple juice, and coconut cream, delivering a sweet, fruity, and creamy flavour profile reminiscent of a tropical getaway.

  • What does the Bahia cocktail taste like?

The Bahia cocktail offers a dominant taste of sweet pineapple balanced by the rich creaminess of coconut. The Cachaça provides a unique sugarcane spirit base, often described as grassy or vegetal, while a touch of lime juice adds a subtle tartness to cut through the sweetness.

  • What is Cachaça?

Cachaça is a Brazilian spirit distilled from fermented sugarcane juice. It's the key ingredient in famous cocktails like the Caipirinha and the Bahia. Unlike most rums, which are made from molasses, Cachaça's sugarcane juice base gives it a distinct, often earthier flavour.

  • Can I substitute Rum for Cachaça in a Bahia?

While you could substitute a light or white rum for Cachaça, it will alter the authentic flavour profile. Cachaça has a unique character derived from fresh sugarcane juice. Using rum will result in a drink closer to a Piña Colada, but it won't be a true Bahia cocktail.

  • What's the difference between Coconut Cream and Coconut Milk?

Coconut cream has a much higher fat content and thicker consistency than coconut milk. For cocktails like the Bahia or Piña Colada, coconut cream (especially cream of coconut like Coco Lopez, which is sweetened) provides the desired richness, texture, and sweetness. Using coconut milk would result in a thinner, less flavourful drink.

  • What glass is best for a Bahia cocktail?

A Hurricane glass is often preferred for the Bahia cocktail due to its generous size and tropical aesthetic, perfectly complementing the drink's vibe. A Highball or Collins glass can also be used if a Hurricane glass isn't available.
